Pencil Tool

Draw freehand lines and sketches with smooth, flowing strokes. Perfect for handwriting, doodling, and detailed line work.

How to use the Pencil

Select the Pencil tool from the toolbar. The context panel shows a Stroke Width slider and number input.

Choose a colour using the colour picker. The pencil always draws in your current selected colour.

Set stroke width. Drag the slider or type a value from 1 to 50 px. Default is 2 px .

Draw on the canvas. Press and drag to sketch. Release to finish the stroke. Tiny movements under 2 px are filtered automatically to keep lines clean.

Cancel mid-stroke. Press Esc while drawing to discard the incomplete line.

What the Pencil creates

Smooth flowing lines

Pointer movement is smoothed automatically using quadratic curves, giving fluid, hand-drawn results without manual adjustment.

Consistent width

Stroke width stays visually consistent at any zoom level.

Undo-compatible

Every stroke is recorded individually in history, so you can undo or redo strokes with Ctrl+Z / Ctrl+Y.

Tips for better drawings

Confident strokes

Quick, decisive movements produce cleaner results than slow, hesitant ones. The smoothing works best with flowing gestures.

Adjust width for detail

Use 1-2 px for fine detail and 6-10 px for bold outlines. Change width between strokes freely.

Layer colours

Switch colour between strokes to build up layers. Combine with the Eraser tool to refine edges.
